Inspiration

Below are some of the themes I have recently explored. With a background in graphic design, I often find my inspiration in shape and type, and I enjoy experimenting to create playful designs that make people smile.

Face Bowl Group

happy faces

The delighted face came from a project I did a while ago. Creating it made me smile, and thought it would make other people smile too.

It started life as a black line graphic and I developed it in to using bright colours for posters and cards as the faces work great with several different happy messages. Then I developed a template for applying it to the ceramics.

HOW

I created the face template using a laser cutting machine. Once the pot has been bisque fired I stick the sticky backed template directly on and glaze over the top. The transfer is removed to leave the uncoated surface which gives it a nice sharp edge that looks great with a bold design.

graphic shapes

I’ve always been a fan of simple bold shapes, it’s just what I like! Especially laid out in a random abstract way so I’ve used these shapes to create patterns on the pots. I like the shapes to be random and falling off the edges.

HOW

I started this process with bits of sticky tape and have progressed to using a laser cutting machine. After the pot has been bisque fired, I stick the individual dots and lines directly on the pot and glaze over the top. When the transfers are removed there is an uncoated surface which gives it a nice sharp edge and a toasted feel when it is glaze fired.

Mostly use the black granite glaze as it looks really striking and contrasts well.

BIG TYPE

I am an Art Director so I have always loved typefaces, and loose graffiti style type, so this was the perfect way to get across some fun positive messages.

HOW

I usually draw the type freehand then scan it in and redraw to make the template. After the pot has been bisque fired the template is stuck on and glaze is put over the top. When the transfer is removed, it leaves the uncoated surface.

Inspiration words

I believe in the power of words. I have created ceramics with various messages; and know that people will choose the words that resonate with them. All the messages mean something to me.

HOW

Once I have thrown the pot, it’s left to dry to a certain consistency. Next, I use old typesetting letters from a printing press to individually push into the clay just the right amount. After it is bisque fired; I rub glaze into the type so it leaves a residue to highlight the letters.
